Pets passport
With the launch of The Pet Travel Scheme (PETS) in 2000, which allows cats and dogs to re-enter the UK without quarantine, (please check exceptions apply for certain countries)
It is now possible to try further a field; there is no reason why you should leave your best friend behind! If you're looking for accommodation in an area not listed just contact us and we'll point you in the right direction.
To travel outside the UK you will need a pet passport; an official certificate gained by following guidelines (some below) you will need to check with DEFRA
If you type in pets passports in your search engine you can take a look at the guidelines and requirements and decide if you wish to go abroad or stay with your pet in the UK.*
- Get your pet fitted with a microchip at your local veterinary surgery (*** Click here ***).
- Your vet will go through the procedure of what happens next e.g.: After the microchip has been fitted your pet must be vaccinated against rabies and then a blood test will be performed to check the level of protection against rabies
- There is a mandatory six month waiting period between the rabies vaccination and blood test, and the permit to travel.
- Your pet may then be issued with an official PETS certificate.
- Your pet must be treated against ticks & tapeworm 24-48 hours before you re-enter the UK and issued with an official certificate of treatment.
- Remember that your pet will not be allowed to travel without prior booking and may be confined to the car.
- You cannot bring a pet into the UK under the Pet Travel Scheme from a private boat or plane.
- Some airlines do not carry pets, Eurostar do not! Euro tunnel and most ferry routes will, as long as they remain inside your vehicle. (The Pet Travel Scheme operates on a number of routes.) for more info on the PETS SCHEME see DEFRA (http://www.defra.gov.uk/animalh/quarantine/)
